The Plural of Narcissus

£1,800.00

Oil on canvas

90 × 70cm

2021

This painting was made after an original collage work combining vintage collage material from 1950s Hollywood Fan Annuals, and vintage horticulture reference books.

These surreal figures form part of a group of works which explore female friendship and solidarity. The vast majority of my works with figuration feature women. In 2021 I was combining collage materials to make subjects for paintings, and these pairings often featured plants or flowers and anonymised women from the past.

Narcissus of myth was the youth cursed by Nemesis to fall in love with his own reflection. The name was given to the flower supposedly for its nodding head (ever gazing at it’s own reflection in pools like its namesake) and is one of the first flowers of spring.

Sometimes in collage the images just want to be together, and these nodding narcissus wanted to belong to this group of lovely ladies in their flowing 1950s skirts.
